Gum Recontouring Hyderabad – Gingivectomy & Crown lengthening is two very common Gum Contouring procedures recommended for aesthetics and in certain conditions, to enable optimum functioning of a prosthesis. Retrograde pressure from the underlying gum can dislodge a crown which requires your Periodontist to re-contour the gum before fixing a crown. In gummy smile cases, a crown lengthening by laser gum reduction helps the cosmetic dental surgeon deliver a pleasing and confident smile.

Gum Recontouring traditionally was done using a scalpel resulting in a bloody field but with the advent of Lasers in dentistry, the laser gum correction has become precise, conservative, bloodless, followed by less inflammation and faster healing.

Why Gum Recontouring or Gingivoplasty?

Gum Recontouring or Gum Reshaping is advised in patients with:

  • Gummy Smile
  • Smile designing
  • Inflammatory conditions leading to polyps and gum margin loss.
  • In certain cases of crown cementation where excessive gum tissue causes retrograde pressure, Gum recontouring is both an aesthetic and functional procedure which helps in harmonizing the balance between teeth and gums.

Does gum laser surgery hurt?

Diode lasers employed for Gum Recontouring with a dual pulse of 810 & 980nm are very effective, precise and virtually pain- free. The Ultradent Gemini laser at ALUX DENTAL is a US FDA approved soft tissue laser that is safe and effective. With the use of anesthetics even minimal discomfort can be avoided.

Cost of Gum Recontouring in Hyderabad or Cost of Gummy Smile Redesigning in Hyderabad?

A Gummy Smile is often corrected for aesthetic reasons where the tooth to root ratio needs to be kept into consideration without being very aggressive. The procedure needs to be precision-driven, enhancing aesthetics and creating a harmony between tooth and gum. The cost of gum recontouring depends on

  1. Type of surgery advised: Laser Gum Recontouring or Conventional Gum Reshaping
  2. Reason for gum recontouring
  3. Number of teeth involved
  4. The Skillset of the cosmetic dental surgeon

Is Gum Recontouring harmful?

No, if handled by a professional like periodontist, prosthodontist or a cosmetic dentist gum recontouring isn’t harmful. An understanding of gum to tooth and tooth to root proportions is integral to achieve a harmony between aesthetics and function. Any imbalance in the above would lead to a compromise in the gum health.

Do receding gums heal?

The elasticity and tonicity of gums make them resilient but the gum cannot regrow especially if infected or receded. In such cases, a tissue graft is used to realign the gum.

Best Invisible braces Treatment in Hyderabad – Numerous innovations that will leave you grinning have become available in recent years. Nowadays the option of invisible braces has helped overcome stigma and discomfort that existed in society. The thought of getting braces done is not an unpleasant one anymore.

Looks have never been the forte when it comes to braces and their affiliation with train tracks was not completely unjustifiable. Within the world of orthodontics, invisible braces have become a sought-after buzzword. The excitement is in with a new generation of discreet braces that have gone unsurprisingly from strength to strength.

What is the latest technology based braces in orthodontics?

In the field of orthodontics, clear aligners are the latest technology-based. Ceramic braces and Lingual braces are also considered as invisible braces.

Whom are they meant for?

For those people who desire to get their teeth straightened but are conscious about their appearance. Those having apprehensions with respect to wires hanging from teeth are adequate candidates for invisible braces.

How do they work?

These braces work just like the conventional ones and set right the protruding teeth and the other irregularities.

What are the different types of invisible braces?

The less easily noticeable braces are of three kinds. one can choose from ceramic, lingual, and clear aligners. Each uses different means to straighten teeth, and each achieves different levels of discreetness.

Ceramic braces: In these braces, the brackets are made up of clear, transparent ceramic material which works in the same way as that of the traditional braces. The less noticeably visible feature of these braces makes them a desired choice for adults who need orthodontic treatment.

Lingual braces: Lingual braces also called “ibraces” are invisible braces one can also opt for instead of traditional braces. Rather than being worn on the front teeth, these are placed on the insides of your teeth, so you can’t see them at all.

Clear aligners: Clear aligners are custom made plastic aligners fabricated based on digital models made from an impression or a scan of your teeth so that they fit your teeth well. They are virtually invisible, non-invasive, comfortable and do not cloud even with long usage.

Invisalign is the leading brand amongst aligners. They provide a gradual series of corrections to achieve full alignment based on simulated tooth movements. These aligners are removable and hence provide ease to the one using it during eating and cleaning.

One has to change the aligner out for a newly made aligner every 2 weeks or as told by the orthodontist. It is advised to wear the aligners for 20-22 hours, as only full-time wear will facilitate proper tooth movement and desired changes.

What are the post-treatment instructions?

Keeping up with regular appointments with your orthodontist is highly recommended. Your clear aligners are to be maintained well. Always remember to remove them before eating or drinking anything other than water. Also, brush your teeth after every meal to avoid staining your aligner.

Invisible Filling or Cosmetic Restoration Hyderabad – Restorations in dentistry were revolutionised after the advent of composite restorations. Composite restorations are aesthetic, durable and have good strength. They are economical options to indirect ceramic laminates and also to indirect inlays. Glass ionomer cement restorations are also white but not as good as composites.

Cosmetic Restorations are broadly divided into:

1. Composite Restorations
2. Glass Ionomer Restorations

The aesthetic properties of a composite are equally important as fluoride-releasing capabilities of a glass ionomer cement. There have been considerable advancements in composite too. Composites are impregnated with fibreglass making them stronger. Inclusions of tints to composite restorations lend them true to life colours.

For one to achieve a true to life restoration or make the restoration completely invisible the anatomy of the tooth needs to be carved post-restoration. This goes without saying that the artistic skills of a cosmetic dental surgeon can add a magic touch where the filling is completely camouflaged. Polishing of the filling or a cosmetic restoration is integral to achieve a barrier-free tooth-filling interface.

Is there something called as an invisible filling in dental?

Tooth restorations which are tooth-like in colour and sculpted to replicate the anatomy can create an illusion as an invisible filling. The advancements in composite restorations have lead dentistry to deliver restorations which are true to life in colour and form.

Why is there a disparity in the cost of an invisible filling or cosmetic filling?

The cost of an invisible filling or a cosmetic filling depends on various factors like:

1. Type of composite or composites used
2. Use of different shades of composites. For example, the body shade can’t be used for an incisal edge and translucent shades can’t be used during masking certain anomalies. The choice for composites is vast. Use of composites with a comprehension of end results, not just based on colour but with an emphasis on replicating anatomy, hue and chroma will help a cosmetic dental surgeon deliver true to life restorations. These kinds of skills would also affect the cost.
3. Use of tints and reinforced components like fibreglass makes a composite or cosmetic restoration true to life and durable which can also affect the cost of a cosmetic filling in Hyderabad

Can cosmetic or invisible filling last a lifetime?

At ALUX DENTAL we believe if the architecture of the broken tooth or the fractured tooth is crafted well and if right materials are used for restoration then a filling will last a lifetime.

Are cosmetic restorations less stronger than amalgam or metal restorations?

Contrary to the assumption, cosmetic or composite restorations are stronger than amalgam restorations. The silver in amalgam reacts to thermal changes and also gets oxidised with time leaving the tooth at the margins. This marginal leakage is susceptible to further secondary decay too. So, it’s a dictum to change a metal filling once in four years whereas composite restorations can last a lifetime.

Tooth enamel is the outer most covering of your teeth. It’s made of calcium and phosphate and is stronger than bone. Your spit, or saliva, is also loaded with calcium and phosphate and bathes the teeth to keep them strong.

How Do Teeth Get Decay?

When you eat snacks like candies, chocolates, biscuits etc, decay-causing bacteria start utilising the carbohydrates in these foods. This leads to the production of acids that attack your enamel and strip away calcium and phosphate from the tooth enamel leaving your teeth more vulnerable to decay and cavities

How does fluoride fight cavities?

When your saliva has fluoride in it from various sources like water, toothpaste etc, your teeth are able to take it in. Once in your enamel, fluoride teams up with calcium and phosphate to create the most powerful defence system your teeth can have, to prevent cavities from forming: Fluoroapatite. It’s much stronger, more resistant to decay than your enamel and fights to protect your teeth.

What products can I use which contain fluoride?

There are many ways to get fluoride fighting for you. On the home front, be sure to brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste that has fluoride in the form of fluorapatite. Even a mouthwash containing the required amount of fluoride will suffice.

Fluoride can also be applied professionally by dentists, usually by a Paediatric Dentist or a General Dentist in the form of a gel, foam or varnish. These methods utilise a much higher level of fluoride concentration than what is present in your toothpaste and mouthwashes. Gels and foams are usually delivered via a tray or a mouthguard. Whereas fluoride varnishes are painted on the tooth. Fluoride can also be applied via a tooth mousse which contains CPP-ACP along with fluoride.

When is fluoride intake most critical?

It is critical for infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years to be exposed to fluoride. This is the timeframe during which the milk teeth and adult teeth erupt in the mouth. However, adults benefit from fluoride too.

Can I develop fluorosis?

The proper amount of fluoride helps prevent and control dental decay. Fluoride ingested during tooth development can result in visible changes in enamel such as white spots because of hypomineralization.

These changes have been broadly termed enamel fluorosis, certain extremes of which are cosmetically objectionable.  Severe forms of this condition can occur only when young children ingest excess fluoride, from any source, during critical periods of tooth development. Concerns regarding the risk for enamel fluorosis are limited to children aged <8 years; enamel is no longer susceptible once its maturation is complete.

Child orthodontics treatment in Hyderabad – is devotedly concerned towards the oral health of children from infancy through teen years, holding the purpose of creating a healthy “functional bite” which can be partly jaw position and partly tooth alignment-based.

Pediatric orthodontics also gets referred to as phase I orthodontic treatment which is the first phase before the braces and includes progressive treatments for patients aged 7 to 11 – especially when jaw irregularities are present.

Child Orthodontics

When lined up correctly the jaws and teeth are able to function as nature intended and bring about an attractive smile as an added bonus.

In what way will orthodontic treatment help my child?

Orthodontic treatment will improve your child’s bite and facilitate proper chewing ability also contributing towards clear speech.

Teeth tend to look good when they function appropriately. An attractive smile is a pleasantly gratifying side-effect of orthodontic treatment, having emotional benefits. Bringing teeth, lips and face into proportion ameliorates children’s self-esteem, boosting his / her self-confidence. Properly aligned teeth are less prone to decay, gum disease and injury.

As my child grows won’t his teeth line up correctly?

With the growth of your child unfortunately, his or her teeth will not straighten out on their own. There is no increase in space that’s available for permanent front teeth as one grows. The permanent teeth are comparatively bigger in size to the set of primary teeth and so for most people, there is often not enough room for teeth accommodation.

As a child gets older, untreated orthodontic problems can become worse, and more difficult to treat. These problems may also lead to tooth decay, gum disease, broken front teeth and loss of bone tissue that holds teeth in place.

What if my child loses a primary tooth early?

If your child loses his /her milk tooth early through decay or injury, the other teeth might drift and fill in the empty vacant space created because of the lost tooth.

As a consequence of this loss, the room required for the child’s permanent teeth to erupt is lost causing crooked or crowded teeth that compromise the functional harmony.

Are there any additional reasons to see an orthodontist sooner than the age of 7?

Yes if one notices, in your child:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Thumb sucking habit
  • Mouth breathing and snoring
  • Difficulty biting, speaking and chewing
  • Clenching jaws and grinding teeth
  • Protruded, crowded or excessively spaced teeth
  • We strongly recommend that you fix an appointment with an Orthodontist

A check-up with the Orthodontist is mandatory when baby teeth are being replaced with the permanent teeth and when the face and jaws are growing.

If a problem already exists or is developing, your orthodontist is able to advise you on whether treatment is recommended, when it should begin, what form of treatment will be required, and its estimated length

Not all orthodontic problems will need correction. Also, not all treatments are done using braces.

There might be a “wait and see” approach of your child’s growth and development periodically and when required treatment will be initiated at the appropriate age.

LOW-LEVEL LASER THERAPY Treatment In Hyderabad – Imagine a tool that could reduce pain, improve healing of wounds, relieve muscle tension and regenerate nerves without the use of drugs and the associated adverse effects. Although it may sound far fetched, it’s a therapeutic technology that has been used clinically for decades: low-level laser therapy (LLLT).

Image Rights – https://www.imagejournals.org/

What is Low-Level Laser Therapy?

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also referred to as phototherapy or photobiomodulation, uses light energy from lasers or light-emitting diodes to elicit cellular and biological responses in the body. Light photons work on various cell processes to stimulate the release of cellular energy, which can be used to restore normal cell morphology and function.

How does low-level laser therapy work?

In contrast to a focused laser beam that concentrates photons in order to cut, ablate, or destroy tissue, Low-Level Laser Therapy is a defocused beam that does not appreciably elevate the tissue temperature and should not destroy tissue. Lasers designed for LLLT are sometimes referred to as “cold lasers.” Lasers work by affecting certain elements within target tissues that absorb specific wavelengths of radiation, which are called Chromophores.

The term “Photostimulation” is often used to describe the effects of LLLT because it tends to stimulate and promote the growth and healing of injured tissues. Published effects in various situations have been explained in the literature for several situations.

What are the various uses of Low-Level Laser Therapy in dentistry?

In dentistry, photobiomodulation can be used for many things including:\

  • Treatment of stress ulcers and traumatic ulcers.
  • Reduction of oral edema.
  • Post-operative pain relief following periodontic procedures, oral surgery, and endodontic procedures.
  • Treatment of recurrent intraoral and labial herpes infections
  • Management of inflammatory conditions such as erosive lichen planus.
  • Reduce pain experienced during orthodontic treatment.
  • Management of temporomandibular joint disorders.
  • For reducing dental sensitivity

How is LLLT used?

A specialised handpiece is used to perform low level laser therapy. At ALUX DENTAL we use the Gemini Laser by Ultradent which is operated in defocus mode to perform low level laser therapy.

Is Low-Level Laser Therapy Safe?

One of the most intriguing aspects of LLLT is safety. Lasers only elicit responses from cells that can utilize the energy produced, thus will have no negative effect on healthy cells. In the various studies done on laser therapy, no clinical side effects have been reported. The Gemini Laser by Ultradent we use at ALUXDENTAL is tissue-specific equipment which is US FDA approved and one of the safest lasers available for treatment.

GUM DISEASE Treatment in Hyderabad: The most common entity that remains ignored in the oral cavity is gum disease. The prime reason being its painless nature. It initially starts with inflammation of gums which is termed as gingivitis, which when aggravates leads to involvement of the bone and the surrounding supporting structures, termed as periodontitis.

gum disease

How do you identify gum disease & Treatment in Hyderabad

As mentioned it is a painless entity as a whole, but upon observed the patient might notice certain signs and symptoms.

  • Gums bleed easily upon brushing.
  • Swollen gums
  • Sometimes the gums may be tender and painful.
  • Change in colour: Reddish pink appearance of the gums may be noticed in most of the cases.
  • In advanced stages of gum disease, you may notice pulling away of gums from the bone and leading to the formation of pockets.
  • Mobile/ shifting teeth: you may able to feel your teeth wobbling upon biting, eating, or speaking.
  • Bad breath/Halitosis
  • Receding gums: The gum line shifts downwards, exposing more of the tooth.

Sensitive teeth: As the teeth are more exposed to the oral cavity due to receding gums, it becomes sensitive upon sipping hot or cold drinks and also upon exposure to cold air.

What is the cause/etiology for gum disease?

Gum disease initiates with the presence of plaque, calculus/tartar due to poor oral hygiene. The others are the contributing factors:

  • Lifestyle habits such as Smoking, Alcohol intake, sleep issues, stress may lead to gum disease.
  • Illnesses like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, individuals with the compromised immune system (H.I.V, A.I.DS), cancers etc.
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Medications: Some medications are known to reduce the flow of the saliva, thereby reducing its protective function in and around the gums. Hence, increasing the chances of bacterial inflow to the gums.
  • Genes : Some individuals are more prone to gum disease due to their genetic makeup.
  • Presence of any fillings, crowns/bridges, brackets/ braces which are not well maintained may lead to gum disease.

How to treat gum disease?

You must visit your Periodontist at earliest. The Periodontist will inspect your gum condition, he/she may advise an x-ray and proceed with a treatment plan depending upon the severity of the disease.

If the problem is mild, you may only require deep cleaning along with mouthwash and medications. In severe cases, the Periodontist may advise Flap or Gum Surgery/ Laser Surgery along with bone grafting procedures which are again decided based on the nature of the disease.

Oral and maxillofacial radiology is the speciality of dentistry and discipline of radiology concerned with the production and interpretation of images and data produced by all modalities of radiant energy that are used for the diagnosis and management of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Radiological Imaging is an important diagnostic adjunct to the clinical assessment of the dental patient.

What are conventional X rays?

Conventional X-rays are the most common type of x-rays. There are several types of intraoral x-rays. Each one shows different aspects of the teeth.

What are Bitewing X rays?

Bite-wing x-rays show details of the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth. Each bite-wing shows a tooth from its crown (the exposed surface) to the level of the supporting bone.

Bite-wing x-rays detect decay between teeth and changes in the thickness of bone caused by gum disease. Bite-wing x-rays can also help determine the proper fit of a crown (a cap that completely encircles a tooth) or other restorations (eg, bridges). It can also see any wear or breakdown of dental fillings.

What are Periapical X rays?

Periapical x-rays show the whole tooth — from the crown, to beyond the root where the tooth attaches into the jaw. Each periapical x-ray shows all teeth in one portion of either the upper or lower jaw. Periapical x-rays detect any unusual changes in the root and surrounding bone structures.

What are occlusal x-rays?

Occlusal x-rays track the development and placement of an entire arch of teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.

DIGITAL X-RAYS

What is Radiovisiography?

The RadioVisioGraphy (RVG) imaging system is a form of X-ray imaging, where digital X-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. It is used to take intraoral periapical radiographs, delivering the highest image resolution.

Advantages include time efficiency through bypassing chemical processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also, less radiation can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to conventional radiography.

What is an OPG scan?

An OPG is a panoramic or wide view x-ray of the lower face, which displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film. It demonstrates the number, position and growth of all the teeth including those that have not yet surfaced or erupted. It is different from the small close up x-rays dentists take of the individual.

teeth. An OPG may also reveal problems with the jawbone and the joint which connects the jawbone to the head called the Temporomandibular joint or TMJ. An OPG may be requested for the planning of orthodontic treatment, for assessment of wisdom teeth or for a general overview of the teeth and the bone which supports the teeth.

How different is OPG X-ray from regular intra-oral X-ray?

Regular intra-oral x-ray provides only the selective view of particular teeth. Whereas an OPG x-ray gives the dentist a complete panoramic view of all the teeth and adjacent bones.

This aids in making well-informed decisions in a wide variety of dental cases and helps in deriving an evidence-based treatment plan.

How much time is involved in capturing an OPG X-Ray?

The process of capturing an OPG X-ray usually requires a minute or so.

What is a LATERAL CEPHALOGRAM?

A Lateral Cephalogram is a lateral or side view x-ray of the face, which demonstrates the bones and facial contours in profile on a single film. Lateral Cephalogram x-rays are usually used in the diagnosis and treatment of orthodontic problems.

DO Dental radiographs, if repeated, have harmful effects?

No, dental radiographs contribute very little radiation which is negligible when compared to the harmful dosage of other forms of radiation.

Are x- rays dangerous for pregnant women? Is it an absolute contraindication?

In pregnant patients, radiographs can be taken in emergency conditions if proper radiation safety and protective measures are taken.

3D DIMENSIONAL IMAGING:

What is a CBCT scan?

It’s basically a three-dimensional radiograph. CBCT stands for ―Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It uses a special type of technology to generate three dimensional (3-D) images of dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths and bone in the craniofacial region in a single scan. Images obtained with Cone Beam CT allow for more precise treatment planning. There is lesser distortion as compared to 2D images.

You may be asked to get a CBCT scan done in the following cases-

  • Dental implants –for the precise planning and placement of dental implants.
  • For Assessment of Relative Bone Quality
  • Root canal treatment- for clear-cut viewing of root canals.
  • Temporomandibular Joint– for diagnosis of TMJ related problems
  • Impacted teeth – for checking the position of the impacted tooth in relation to the neighbouring structures like mandibular nerve and maxillary sinus.
  • Orthodontic treatment– for evaluation of the facial structures and teeth.

What are the benefits of CBCT scan over 2D radiographs?

  • Benefits of CBCT scan include high definition images with exceptional details.
  • Multidimensional assessment is possible as multiple images are generated in various planes.
  • Helpful inaccurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Beneficial for Guided Surgeries.

CBCT or 3D imaging is surely going to shape the future of dental diagnosis and treatment planning. This quick and painless procedure helps inaccurate assessment of your facial skeleton and helps in the planning of reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry procedures. At ALUX DENTAL we have the latest KAVO OP 3D imaging modality; one of the best CBCT machines for our patients.

Dental caries is an infection of the tooth which affects all the three layers of tooth – enamel, dentin and pulp. In early childhood or infancy, nursing habits can affect your child’s teeth. Demineralisation of teeth due to a nursing bottle or suckling is quite common and in severe cases, it can lead to nursing bottle caries and rampant caries.

The negative pressure of suckling or pacifier causes extreme dryness which leads to demineralisation and further decay. This sets up a sequela of destructive events which can be intervened with good oral hygiene and by incorporating prophylactic measures at home. Rampant caries and nursing bottle caries are aggressive conditions and require a visit to your Pedodontist or Child Dental Specialist.

Can Food Habits Influence Tooth Decay?

Yes, dietary habits greatly influence tooth decay. Processed, sticky or starchy foods with high sugar and acidic content do cause dental caries or tooth decay. This with poor oral hygiene can be lethal.

Contrary to the belief, plain chocolates do not cause cavities as chocolates do not leave a residue on the tooth surface and have rapid clearance, unlike starchy and fibrous food. An apple can cause more tooth decay than plain dark chocolate. Candies, gummies and aerated drinks are quite harmful too.

How to prevent tooth decay in early childhood or in infants?

  1. Avoid nursing when the child is about to sleep
  2. Avoid using a pacifier as an excuse to keep your child occupied
  3. Avoid high sugar milk or synthetic milk while bottle-feeding
  4. Encourage teethers
  5. Encourage brushing and good oral hygiene practices
  6. Clearing the mouth of an infant with wet cotton is a good practice
  7. Prophylactic varnishes can prevent tooth decay and act as a vaccine against caries
  8. Casein from milk also protects teeth from tooth decay ( but avoid sugar in milk )

What is the best treatment for rampant caries?

In rampant caries, it’s very important to identify the cause of decay and then restore all the affected teeth with either glass ionomer cement or composite restorations. In severely damaged cases, extraction of the afflicted teeth and preserving the extracted site with a space maintainer can be recommended too. Fluoride releasing cement is ideal in rampant caries due to their anti-cariogenic properties.

Is treating multiple teeth decay, same day harmful?

No, tooth or teeth restoration with cement is a conservative dental procedure and it only requires your child’s compliance. Since kids can be moody and apprehensive it is recommended not to force all restorations on the same day and schedule them instead.

Cost of nursing bottle caries treatment in Hyderabad?

Kids with Nursing bottle caries present with the decay of all upper front teeth, this affects them in more than one way:

  1. Physically – Eating habits are affected
  2. Socially – They may experience bullying as a result of compromised aesthetics
  3. Speech – Severely decay and early loss of anterior teeth can lead to speech slurring and lisping

The treatment of nursing bottle caries involves:

  1. Habit Breaking
  2. Restoration with fluoride-releasing cements
  3. In severe cases restoring after extraction with a prosthesis
  4. Prophylactic Varnish application on unaffected teeth
  5. Instilling good oral hygiene measures in your kids

The cost of treating nursing bottle caries depends on a number of teeth affected, type of cement, the extent of decay and type of treatment. We recommend consulting a Pedodontist at ALUX DENTAL Hyderabad.

DENTAL CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY – Hyderabad

What is a Dental Cone Beam CT Scan or CBCT?

Dental Cone Beam computed tomography (CT) is a special type of x-ray machine used in situations where regular dental or facial x-rays are not sufficient.

dental-cone-beam-computed

A Dental Cone Beam (CB) CT scanner uses x-rays and computer-processed x-ray information to produce 3D cross-sectional images of the jaws and teeth. It is a smaller, faster and safer version of the regular CT scanner.

Through the use of a cone-shaped x-ray beam, the radiation dosage is lower, and the time needed for scanning is reduced. The machine moves around your head in a circular motion in a similar way to the Panoramic Dental Radiography unit.

What happens during a dental cone beam CT or CBCT?

You will be seated in the CBCT machine with your head carefully positioned and you will be asked to keep absolutely still while the scan is being taken. Each scan takes just a few seconds to perform.

Why should I have a dental CBCT scan?

The scan will give us in-depth information which cannot be obtained from normal X-Ray examinations. For example, if you are being considered for dental implants or other special procedures, it enables us to assess the exact shape and density of the bone.

What are the risks associated with it?

CBCT scans are low-dose examinations and give an X-Ray dose to the patient that is normally considerably less than a medical CT scan. So, a CBCT scan of the jaws will give approximately one fifth to one-tenth of the dose of a conventional CT scan of the same area. As with any X-ray Examination, please inform the Radiologist if you are pregnant.

Will I feel any pain?

This procedure is not painful, but you will need to remain still for the duration of the scan. If you are claustrophobic please mention this to the Radiographer so that they can take appropriate care.

Where can I get a CBCT scan?

Most dental clinics in Hyderabad lack an in-house CBCT machine. So, the majority of the times you might have to visit a diagnostic centre to get this scan done. At ALUX DENTAL, we have the KAVO OP 3D by KAVO KERR which is a low dose, in-house CBCT machine which captures the x-ray imagine within seconds.

What are the benefits vs. risks? Benefits

  • The focused x-ray beam reduces scatter radiation, resulting in better image quality.
  • A single scan produces a wide variety of views and angles that can be manipulated to provide a more complete evaluation.
  • Cone beam CT scans provide more information than conventional dental x-ray, allowing for more precise treatment planning.
  • CT scanning is painless, non-invasive and accurate.
  • X-rays used in CT scans should have no immediate side effects.

Risks:

There is always a slight chance of cancer from excessive exposure to radiation. However, the benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs the risk.

At ALUX DENTAL Hyderabad our Radiologist can provide you with a lead collar and a lead apron for added protection from X-rays thereby greatly minimising your exposure to radiation.
